If you follow me on Facebook, you know I’ve been talking about wanting to donate my hair over the past week or two.
Today I did it.
I have to admit, the thought of making a hair doll did cross my mind. It’s one of those so-creepy-I-think-it’s-kind-of-funny thing. I can just picture Jason being all weirded out while I chase him around the house with it.
Speaking of Jason, he hasn’t seen my new hairdo yet. I got home after he went to bed, so I’m kind of excited to see what he thinks in the morning when he wakes up.
Here are the before & after photos:
I definitely had a LOT of hair, and I started thinking that as much as I love my long hair, most of the time I wear it pulled back in a ponytail or a bun to keep it out of my face. If I’m not enjoying having long hair, why not donate it to someone that can enjoy it?
I did a little background checking into organizations that accept donated hair and decided on Beautiful Lengths based on feedback I heard from other folks that had donated with them before as well as my own research. They require a minimum of 8 inches, so that’s what I told my stylist when I went to the salon today.
Let me back up a moment. When I say “my” stylist, I mean my coworker Julie’s stylist. Part of the reason my hair got so long is because I only went in for a trim every few months, and since it was just a trim and not a full cut & style, I’d go someplace cheap and quick like Fantastic Sam’s. I didn’t have a regular stylist or a regular salon, for that matter.
Anyway, that’s how I found Jessica at Juvo Salon not too far from my house. I told her that I was cutting my hair for donation and that I wanted a new style to go with it. She made sure to measure the length for me and asked lots of questions about my likes and dislikes. I’m totally happy with my experience and plan to go back. Here’s a peek at the new style she gave me:
Definitely much shorter and lighter, and now I even have a bit of style! I’ll be mailing in just under 12 inches to donate to Beautiful Lengths tomorrow and I couldn’t be happier about the whole experience.
I know it will feel weird for a while and I’ll need to remember I don’t need as much shampoo anymore in the shower, but I think it was totally worth it.
