I first heard about Heifer International when my friends Casey & Meg got married. That’s where they “registered” for gifts. The organization allows people to purchase livestock and environmentally-sound agricultural training to help improve the lives of those in our world that struggle daily for basic resources a lot of us take for granted.
In case you’re not familiar with Heifer, here’s a little bit about their mission.
The Read To Feed program is a new reading program that gives children a social good incentive while promoting literacy. In Read to Feed, children (individually or as a group) get sponsors for each book they read during their challenge period. At the end of the program, the group pools its funds and decides which animals to donate through Heifer International, to help other families move from hunger to self-reliance.
How cool is it that we can get our kids motivated to read more while also helping other families in need? Even better, in my opinion, is that it gives us a great opportunity to teach our children about the importance of social awareness and community responsibility.
Heifer International offers a kit to help get your and your kids started (for individuals or for schools/groups) that includes teaching tips, donation forms, bookmarks, posters, certificates of achievement, and stickers to keep the children motivated to continue reading and helping. To learn more or to order the Read to Feed kit, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 877-275-READ (7323). The Read to Feed materials can also be downloaded at www.readtofeed.org.
