One Of The Coolest Things I’ve Ever Seen

This past week I had the opportunity to take a glass blowing glass at FOCI Minnesota Center for Glass Arts.

It.   Was.   Awesome.

I’ve been wanting to take a glass blowing class for nearly 10 years now, ever since I tapped into my creative side during a stone sculpture class way back in the day. I’m not really sure how I made the leap from stone to glass, but the desire has been there, quietly burning for a quite some time.

Recently, Living Social offered a deal I couldn’t pass up – a glass blowing class to make your own pint glass, followed by a beer tasting at FOCI: Minnesota Center for Glass Arts.

Obviously I jumped at the opportunity. How could I pass that up?

I had the wrong time written down for the class, so I wound up a half hour early, which gave me time to explore the gallery.

There were all kinds of amazing pieces, like these glass animal balloons.

Some of the vases overwhelmed me with their beauty.

This glass robot was one of the gallery pieces that really caught my eye.

Todd Cameron Glass Robot

As luck would have it, one of the instructors for the night was Todd Cameron, the creator of this robot piece.

Todd Cameron

Besides being totally cute, he’s also completely talented. I was able to catch him practicing making a horse on video, and he gave me permission to share the video here. I think this is just way too cool – in less than 90 seconds, he’s able to make a horse figurine out of glass.

If you are unable to view the video above, please click here.

Todd made a few of these while I was there. Here’s a close up of one of the others so you can see more detail.

That’s from just 90 seconds of working with molten glass. Isn’t that cool?

  1. That is truly amazing! I think that would be interesting just to learn the science behind how they make all the beautiful glass pieces. I am not creative enough to do something like that, but I love looking at it 🙂 Good luck with your class

  2. I can’t believe some of those pieces are glass! I would love to see some of that being made, it is just amazing.

  3. That’s so cool! Love the robot. And that class sounds like SO much fun. When I was in college, there was a glass-blowing club. I tried to join, but the waiting list was insane – it was like over an entire semester wait to get in. Do you have a picture of what you made?!

    • I went to pick up my pint glass this weekend, but since my initials didn't stamp in very well on my piece, I wasn't sure if the one I thought was mine was really mine. I'm hoping they can narrow it down for me and I can go pick it up this week.

  4. I’m always amazed at what these artists can do! And I love love love that elephant!!!

  5. Wow!!! They is SUPER cool!!! Thanks for sharing the video too!!! So much talent!!!

  6. omg- that’s sooo awesome!!!! such talent and skill! the video is so cool-i never saw anything like it!

  7. Don’t you just love glass blown art? We have a place here in my city called Third Degree Glass Factory. Check them out online!

  8. This is seriously amazing! You need some extraordinary talent to do this!

  9. I would absolutely LOVE to take a glass blowing class. I have seen it done before but just can’t figure out how it’s done. So um…did you blow the glass or did Mr. Cameron blow your glass for you? *cough*

  10. That’s so awesome! I want to see what YOU made. What a cool opportunity – I need to adventure out more.

  11. That is so awesome! I love the glass balloon animals the most, but everything is gorgeous!

  12. I would love to try glass blowing, even if only to make witch balls

  13. That is amazing! I don’t think I could ever be that talented!

  14. Those vases are gorgeous! I’ve seen glass blowing before, but never like that color!
