My 8 Favorite Baby Registry Items

Last week one of my Facebook followers asked a great question – she’s pregnant with her first and was wondering, other than the “big ticket” items, what are some favorites to add to your baby registry?

baby registry

These are my favorite baby registry items once you get past the really big baby stuff (like the crib & car seat).

#1 – Baby Carrier

I didn’t know I was going to love baby wearing so much, but I do. I’d rather wear Levi than haul around the stroller. When he was an infant, I loved the Moby stretchy wrap. Now I use my Ergo and Boba soft-structured carriers most often.

#2 – Cloth Diapers

This might surprise you guys, but cloth diapers weren’t actually on my registry list when I was pregnant with Levi. At the time, I registered at Target and Babies R Us, and they didn’t carry cloth diapers in their stores (though Target did carry them online). If I ever have #2, you can bet cloth diapers will be on my list.

#3 – Crib Mattress

This is high up on my list because it’s an expensive item that was really important to me. Even though we co-sleep a lot, Levi still spends lots of time in his crib, so I wanted the best crib mattress for him to sleep on. For me, that meant an eco-friendly bamboo crib mattress. I didn’t realize just how many options there are, so take a little time to decide what you want.

#4 – Activity Table Or Bounce Seat (or both)

For the most part, my own registry focused on things for the first 1-6 months after the baby arrived. I wish I would have included some more items for when Levi got mobile and started pulling himself up. I got a good deal on a Rainforest Jumperoo from Amazon, which he loved to bounce in. Be sure to check out the best baby bouncer reviews if you need help deciding on which might be best to add to your registry. I also loved having an activity table where Levi could stand and play once he was a little more sturdy on his legs.

#5 – Toy Box

Oh how I wish I had added this to my registry! I love the magic cleanup that a toy box gives you – you can toss everything in there, put on the lid, and suddenly your living room looks much cleaner.

#6 – Baltic Amber Teething Necklace

Levi started teething early and it seemed like it went on FOREVER before he cut his first tooth. I bought him a baltic amber necklace from Inspired By Finn and it really seemed to help. In fact, I just bought a new one recently (lighter colored) since he’s due to get his two-year molars this summer.

#7 – Rectal Thermometer

When baby has a fever and you’re on the phone with the doctor and they ask you to take your baby’s temperature rectally, this certainly comes in handy.

#8 – Sleep Sacks That Zip

Since you can’t use blankets on newborns, sleep sacks are awesome for making sure they stay nice and warm. The kind that zip from top to bottom are really nice, since there’s no zipper at the top to poke baby’s chin. Levi didn’t care for being swaddled, but he loved his sleep sacks.

What are your favorite baby registry items?

This post brought to you by – Helping everyday parents find the best mattress for their baby.

  1. I have to agree with almost all of this list! I never thought to register for a baby carrier or cloth diapers and I definitely should have! Also, definitely an amber necklace, and a bouncer is so necessary — I didn’t but one until baby was 6 months — why did I wait so long!? Skip things like a diaper genie and wipe warmers, total wastes of space and money! Get the things off this list instead!

And by the way, along the line of carriers… I use Moby, but my guy is 14 months and 22 lbs now. I’ve looked t both the ergo and boba but can only afford one… which one is better?

  2. Extra fitted sheets for the crib were a lifesaver since my youngest spit up all the time.

  3. For those of us who don’t use cloth diapers, the Diaper Genie is a must-have! Also I love our digital forehead thermometer, Itzbeen Baby Care Timer (indespensible during the first 2 months), car sunshade, and Gro-Egg Color Changing Digital Room Thermometer. We also really loved and used these books: What to Expect the First Year; Happiest Baby on the Block and Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child;

  4. I had a baby blanket on my registry which my son fell in love with. He’s 5 now and to this day he still loves his “blankie.”

    Hello! Great post!

  6. This is a great list. The one thing I would add is a great co-sleeper. We still don’t use the crib, but we have a great crib mattress.

  7. Wipe warmer. Kids don’t scream as much if you don’t surprise them with a cold wipe during a diaper change.

  8. Jenny Wisdom says:

Hi! Fun post. Also visiting from the gnomes mom (although I am a regular follower of yours)

  9. I definitely wish I had asked for cloth diapers from more people with our daughter, and I wished I had skipped the bedding set and just bought crib sheets since that’s the only part of the set we have ever used!

  10. You should do a follow up to this about the top things you shouldn’t register for…lol

  11. I love that this list consists of things that are NECESSARY and not just things to buy that will just sit around. Great post!!! 🙂

  12. Amanda H says:

Favorite – I love anything hand made. My youngest got the most adorable hat with bright colors. I know it’s not needed, but after having two other kids the extra, special hand made things were nice.

I also should have registered with my first for things like infant soap. laundry soap, etc. These are expensive.

  13. I love Aden + Anais boutique swaddling blankets. I didn’t discover them until my son was 5 months old but he is still using them now at 15 months. They are so soft, everybody in the family loves them. I recently bought a 4 pack on amazon to split up for shower gifts & one of them had a few loose strings in the middle, about an inch long. I called A+A & they gladly shipped me another 4 pack in the color of my choice. No questions asked, no need to send the other 3 back that were perfectly fine…who has that kind of customer service anymore? These blankets are $50 retail price for the 4 pack…worth every penny! I do love all of your other suggestions though!

Hi, great post! Stopping by from The Gnomes Mom. 🙂

  15. Cloth Diapers are a great registry item. I just wish more people knew about them. Nobody knew how to buy them or what to get me so I wound up buying them all by myself.

  16. My favorite gift was a 3 pack of muslin swaddles.

  17. ginger sharrow says:

    Sleep sacks are a must

  18. I will have to say bibs and/or onesis cause you can’t have too many of those 🙂

  19. stacy h says:

cloth diapers/supplies, breastpump and supplies, swaddle blankets =) as local as possible!

  20. All good stuff! I really wish I would have thought of the toy box too. I would add wet bags, of all sizes, and maybe a co-sleeper. I didn’t use it long, but it was very helpful for us while we adjusted to having the baby in bed with us 🙂

  21. I wish I had known when we registered that we were going to use cloth diapers. Instead we registered for disposables and got a ton of them!

  22. Samantha Snider says:

    Hi!! Awesome blog!! 🙂

  23. Sarah Fuhrmann says:

    I agree!

  24. Bouncy seat, definitely! Also breastmilk storage bags and lanolin!

  25. I wish I had started cloth diapers with my first, but I wasn’t yet converted then…this is a great list and I registered for and received many of these things for my baby shower. I am now using them for baby #2.

  26. kari meeker says:

hi! from gnome’s mom.. BUT i am already a reader… so i have to say i agree with most of this.. we didn’t use sleep sacks, though, we swaddled.. i liked our halo swaddlers but the velcro wore out before she was done so we had to rebut them for just another 5 weeks or so, kind of a bummer. i think next time we’ll go with a different brand.. also love Aden and Anais!

  27. Jamie G says:

I love my BabyHawk Oh Snap! carrier. It’s been wonderful.

  28. after 2 kids i can tell ya most of things on peoples lists are totally useless and a waste of money. The best things to give are diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, alcohol wipes for the belly button, vaseline for little boys, onsies and crib sheets. however most people get hooked into buying the cutesie stuff leaving the parents in need.

  29. Baby carrier/wrap for SURE. 🙂

  30. For us, the crib, car seat, and diapers were the bare necessities…but we ended up getting all of the above! How can such a little being need so many things?? ; )

  31. Hi, this is a very useful article, will share with my friends who are due soon! ; )

  32. Some sort of bouncy seat, that is easy to tote around, so mommy can shower and a pack & play.

  33. Rena Hyde says:

On my registry, I had a set with different medicines. It came in handy!

  34. Rena Hyde says:

The item that was most handy for me was a kit with different medicines!

  35. I love:

    Aden + Anais muslin wraps

    Cloth wipes

    Natural baby shampoos

but I also like to make personal handmade gifts for expectant friends!

  36. Sarah @ A Runners Heart says:

I agree with all of those and must add a Boppy! My daughter is 9 months old and I am still using and loving this thing! Not only for nursing, but my daughter loves to nap in it! 🙂

  37. Great info! Was looking for something like this last year!

Stopping by to say hi too, from twitter party!

  39. I registered for cloth through one of the cloth diaper websites…now I just have my own site 🙂

  40. Heather says:

I’ve been wondering if the teething necklaces really work. It really seems too good to be true, but they’re so pretty!

  41. Christina C says:

    Hi! Great post!

  42. I would have to add burpcloths, I always needed more! an cloth wipes, good for bottoms and noses.

  43. beth carbone says:

definitely lansinoh lanolin nipple cream, and a baby bath!! i was so scared to bathe Michael when he was little, and it helped having an independent bath that i could put him in on the kitchen table~ he loved it, too! 🙂 a breast pump & a few glass bottles too for the working momma or for the just-in-case i found to be useful and was glad to have even though i didn’t expect to need it.
