The Best Game Of Summer: Snipe Hunt

Have you ever had your friends trick you into going on a snipe hunt? That’s what this game is based on. It’s kinda like hide-and-seek, but oh so much more fun.

So you’re probably wondering – what exactly is a snipe? If you’ve been tricked into hunting for snipe, you know they’re made-up creatures. In the case of Snipe Hunt, though, they actually exist. My neighbor Kellan showed one off.

The way the game works is just like hide and seek, but with a twist. The trick is, the snipes make noise. The longer it takes to find the snipes, the more noise they make. They have an easy on-off switch on the bottom so you only have to turn them on when you’re ready to play.

Turning on the snipe

There are two snipes – one red, one green – that sit in a little nest. The nest is important because that’s how you “reset” the timer inside the snipes that make noise. You can divide up into two teams and let each team take turns hiding the snipe, or you can do what we did, and let the adults hide the snipes for the kids to find. We sent them off to a tree to count to 30 so we could go hide them.

Hiding the snipe

At first, the boys were a little disappointed. They started hunting for the snipes, but couldn’t find them right away (and hey, we’re dealing with the short attention spans of a 5 year old, 3 year old, and Levi).

Snipe Hunting

That’s where the noise comes in. We told the boys to make sure to listed closely, and as soon as they heard the snipe making its chirping noise, they rushed to follow the sound. That helped keep them engaged and excites.

Snipe Hunt is now officially our favorite summer game. It can be played indoors or outdoors, and it’s great entertainment for parents and kids alike. In fact, we just played it at our annual block party. My neighbor Kelly from Muddy Flowers has a great post showing how much fun we had, and I love this photo she snapped of the kids looking for the snipes.

Snipe Hunt is available from Education Outdoors, Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, Books A Million, and other specialty stores nationwide. It retails for about $24.99 and is a great game for the whole family to enjoy.

Disclosure: I was sent a complimentary game to try out. All opinions and shouts of “Ready or not, find your snipe!” are 100% my own.
