A couple weeks ago I shared on Facebook that I was giving my front yard a bit of a pirate makeover. Ready to see how it’s turned out?
I was going for “Tastefully Eccentric.” I didn’t want to be too crazy, but I did want a bit of a pirate feel for the front of the house.
This is what I started with:
I had weed-ridden rocks and a couple bushes I didn’t like in the front.
We started by removing the bushes, as well as some roots/stumps from bushes the old owner had cut down, but never fully removed. Then came the rock removal. That’s seriously hard work. After doing 3 wheelbarrows by myself, I got smart and hired my neighbor to help. He’s better at the hard labor stuff than I am.
I found these gorgeous Jack Daniels whiskey barrels at the hardware store and got them planted with sun-loving flowers after laying down new landscape fabric.
I also found these skull flamingos on Amazon and just had to buy them.
I figure if normal yard décor includes pink plastic flamingos, skull flamingos are much more pirate-y.
After laying down pine bark mulch to replace the old faded landscaping rocks under the windows, I added a few skull flamingos around the barrels.
Of course, no pirate makeover would be complete without raising the skull & crossbones.
There are a few finishing touches I want to add, but I have to convince Jason to let me do them first. I want to add black stripes on the white section of the roof behind the flag and also get new shutters to match the green trim on the other windows. But overall, I think it turned out pretty well and I like the little facelift we gave the front yard.
Now, if only I can keep the flamingos in the ground. Levi likes to hug them and pull them off the stakes, lol.
What do you think of my landscaping project?

I bet those birds would look real from afar! Great job, but I hope you added a ship steering wheel (what is that called?) to complete the pirate effect!

I love those flamingos! So much better than the standard pink! I think you added just the right amount of pirate

I love it! My only suggestion, which is biased, would be to paint the white parts of the house the same color as the stuff around the whiskey barrels…it’d be much warmer looking (I think) and more cohesive color-scheme-wise.

It’s nice. I’d want to paint the white parts of the house a dark brown to match the stuff surrounding the barrels.

It’s awesome.
very cool!!
i love the flamingos, and they work perfectly with the whiskey barrels & jolly rogers flag!!
the barrels look great~ good work!
great job! I didn’t realize that the flamingos were skeleton flamingos in the broad view pic. I actually thought you may have spray painted them black. LOL I love that you added these touches yet there are elements that are not merely decoration for an event, but that will be permanent.
It’s awesome! Looks really good, without being too much. Great job.;)
OMG I love those flamingos. I highly doubt I would keep them out all year round but they could rock our yard for Halloween!
i think it looks great! i so want those flamingos! they are so cool im actually jealous of your flamingos!:P lol
