Babywearing Giveaway: Onya Baby Outback

I may or may not have a bit of a baby carrier addiction. When my new Onya Outback baby carrier arrived in the mail, Jason asked, incredulously, “Just how many carriers do you need?!”

My response: “All of them.”

Which I think is totally reasonable. I use my carriers all the time – out walking the dogs, to comfort Levi when he’s cranky, to keep him from pulling everything off the shelves at the craft store, and more. Jason understands, though – he’s worn Levi in a back carry while mowing the lawn :)

One of the reasons I was so excited about trying the Onya is because it also doubles as a seat.

Onya 3 Ways

I have other carriers that can be used for front and back carries, but Onya is the only one I know of that can be used on a chair to secure your child in place.

Or in my case, a Happy Nappers dragon.

Onya Seat Dragon

Why did I use a stuffed dragon instead of Levi? Because Jason and I couldn’t figure out if we had hooked up the seat properly to the chair, and when it comes to babywearing (or baby sitting, as the case may be), I always err on the side of caution.

Both Jason and I tried to follow the instruction manual, but got confused with all the extra straps.

Onya Seat Straps

See what I mean? Looks a little intimidating, right? And probably unsafe.

After watching the instructional video from Onya Baby’s YouTube channel, it turns out I was making things more complicated than they were. I had it correct, just not tightened properly in the back.

The reason I wanted to show you guys my strap mess isn’t so you think Onya is a bad carrier or that the seat doesn’t work. It’s because I know what it’s like to try something that looks complicated and give up. I did it with my Moby – I hated it because I couldn’t tie it properly. Luckily, I had a friend show me how to use the Moby wrap, and once I watched her do it, I realized just how simple it was. The same principle is true for using the Onya as a seat. Save yourself some frustration and watch the video first :)

Onya Front Carry

As a soft-structured carrier, I totally love it. The shoulder pads have a nice thickness and the waist belt is very wide in front, which gives plenty of support. The back strap is easily pushed down so it spreads the weight across the center of your shoulders, but slides up so you can buckle and unbuckle it yourself.

Levi is almost two, and you can see that he still has plenty of room to grow. The Onya is my new “car carrier” – I keep it in the backseat of my car so it’s handy when I’m out running errands. It’s especially nice to have the seat available just by unzipping a hidden pouch, so if Levi wants to have a snack while we’re out at the park or (heaven forbid) the mall, I can strap him in so he doesn’t wander off while I’m unpacking his diaper bag.

The Onya Baby Outback carrier is available on their website for $149.00 or at select retailers nationwide.

Baby wraps always looks so confusing to me….I’m on my 6th child and tried some with my first child and am finally ready to try it again with our newest little one….the only problem I’ve had is trying to find one that looks comfortable enough to tote my 28 lbs of joy around on my back lol!

  5. I love babywearing because it leaves me hands free. I’m expecting baby #3 in February and have a 3 year old and 13 month old. I NEED to be able to use my hands while taking care of this new babe. Carriers allow me to do that.

This carrier looks really nice. What other soft side carriers can you compare it to? Do you like it better than an Ergo for example?

  7. LOL! I never thought to use a carrier on a chair! That’s awesome!

  8. Love it! It is so much nicer than having to carry a seat in your car when you go to someone’s house, too! Just strap them to a chair and you know they are not going anywhere!

I love babywearing because it keeps my tornado of a child from destroying stores while I shop!

  11. I love that babywearing takes the pressure off my arms. My son loves being carried and it’s nice to have my hands free (& not sore).

  12. I like them because it makes me feel closer to them. Plus your arms are free.

I saw this carrier on another site and right away I was intrigued by the fact that it can be used as a seat. What a novel idea! My friend has a travel high chair, which is really nice, but bulky. I like the idea of this because I usually have my carrier along anyway and it doesn’t take up hardly any space! I so want on of these now, even though I already have a Boba, a Baby Bjorn, a Mobywrap and a Hotsling!

Oh and I love babywaring because it frees up my hands and I don’t have to worry about pushing around a bulky stroller or hauling one around for that matter. Plus, it makes me feel closer to my DD.

  14. I can’t grocery shop with out one! I have a 7 year old a 5 year old and twin 1 year olds that are not walking really well yet. So if mama has to run to the store I need a carrier. I LOVE the colors of the Onya and am really glad you reviewed it. I also love having my twins close to me!!
