I’ve been trying to organize my kitchen better lately. One of my biggest frustrations is how quickly things pile up on the kitchen counter.
See that stuff next to my stove? That’s our recycling that doesn’t belong there. Recycling in our kitchen has a home – in the pantry.
The problem, of course, is that recycling doesn’t often make it to the pantry. Either it’s too big to fit in the plastic bag I keep hanging above the trash can, or it just magically parks itself on my kitchen counter.
We’ve thought about using a paper bag instead to collect our recycling under the kitchen sink, but then we run into the problem when something is still wet (like a recently rinsed milk jug) that leaks through the bag. Using both a plastic bag and a paper bag seems wasteful, so I needed a different option.
The Rubbermaid Hidden Recycler has been the answer.
It mounts to any standard cabinet door and is detachable, so it’s easy to take out the recycling when it’s full. The photo above doesn’t do it justice showing how much it can hold.
This has a 64 oz. apple juice bottle (not crushed), a large Sunny D jug (also not crushed), a crushed 2 liter soda bottle, a crushed aluminum can, and there’s still room for more.
The best part? My counters are clean!
Levi is really big on helping right now, so he loves opening the lid to put the recycling into the Rubbermaid bin. Jason likes that it just lifts right out, so he can just grab the handle and take it out to the garage to our big recycling bin.
I like that the bag is not only water-proof, so I don’t have to worry about leaks, but it’s also machine washable, so cleaning up messes is no problem.
The Rubbermaid Hidden Recycler retails for about $16 and is available both online and in most Meijer stores.

Holy moly. This is perfect, we have a dying ground of recycling on our counter. Which means I get it done but it would be nice not to look at it all the time!
I love this!!!! This would solve the problem of the cluttered dish drying rack that I have:) I hate the way it looks.
This would be a great addition to the new house my son and I are renting! Living in apartments the last 3 years, we didn’t have the option of recycling. NOW…I am ready to get back on the wagon! Thanks for the information. I’ll be looking into this, even if I don’t win.
This would be nice to have. We currently use an ugly bin (bought at a garage sale) on our kitchen counter. We dump it into recycling every night, but still, it’s ugly!

can’t wait to start teaching my kids about recycling
We are big recyclers here. I’d love to have this because we have 1 recycling can inside the house and it doesn’t seem like enough!
Our recyling takes over also. Our bun is in the basement since our kitchen is not big enough for it. I let it pile up and then take it down
What a great idea! And it wouldn’t have to be just for recycling… it could be for storing plastic bags and stuff like that.
