I recently read an article from Egnyte about online file sharing , and, more specifically, about online file storage.
Admittedly, a good chunk of the article was a little over my head. I’m used to the old-school method of file sharing – namely, take the file out of the file cabinet and walk it over to the person who needs it.
But at my day job, we actually use Egnyte as a way to communicate and share information across our global business. I’ve mentioned here before that I work for a company that manufactures equipment. The thing is, we manufacture equipment in 6 different countries and have sales offices in 36 countries. As much as I would like to tell my boss I need to take a trip to the UK to drop off a file, that’s just not going to happen.
Instead, we use Egnyte as our online file storage system. It allows us to coordinate activities and share documents, such as manufacturing specifications, supplier scorecards, and even top-secret engineering designs safely and securely across millions of miles.
After reading the article and being thoroughly confused (if you want to give it a shot, here it is), I realized that I already do some virtualization of my own. I use Dropbox to back up my blog articles. I use Carbonite to back up my home computer files. Heck, I use “the cloud” to store books for my Kindle and music for my iPhone. All of these systems allow every day folks like you and me to virtually store our files and know that we’ll have access to them when we need it.
Thinking about it made me realize that there are probably lots of small businesses (mompreneurs, bloggers with multiple sites, etc..) that could benefit from virtual storage solutions. If your business isn’t large enough for a system like Egnyte, it’s still worth checking out some of the other options mentioned above. Even if you’re not a business – I’ve had two iPhones die before Cloud backup was available (you can read that sob story here), and both times I lost a lot of photos of Levi I wish I would have had backed up. A simple online storage tool cool have saved those memories from being lost.
