Charlie Banana diapers were music to my ears before I even tried them the first time. Eco friendly organic cotton hybrid diaper. Yep, I had to try them out!
Plus, this super cute robot print caught my eye. What can I say? I’m a sucker for fun fluff.
The Charlie Banana one-size cloth diaper is a 2-in-1 system with adjustable leg elastic and crossover tabs with hip snaps. Each diaper comes with two inserts, and as I mentioned above, they’re available in totally cute prints ![]()
The Dirty Details:
Day Use: 5 Bums Up
Overnight Use: 3 Bums Up
Ease of Use: 4 Bums Up
Quality: 4 Bums Up
Overall: 4 Bums Up
Daytime Use:
No issues here for daytime use. I stuffed this diaper with one reusable insert and that absorbed just fine for Levi during the day.
I especially like the way the waist fits him. There’s what I call a “lay flat” band around the top, so it fit nice and snug without any gaps above Levi’s butt. We didn’t have any issues with leaks during the day, and I give this feature all the credit for that.
If you’re wondering why there seems to be extra fabric in the front in the photo above, it’s because we got a swim diaper in the same print and Levi would not let me take photos of the regular diaper without trying to put the swim diaper on, too.
Overnight Use:
For use, this diaper was about average for overnight. One of the included inserts wasn’t enough absorbency, and adding a second made it a little too bulky for my preference, so I used a natural fiber insert instead with better success. Levi’s a tummy sleeper, and I think the little seem along the front of the diaper (you can see it in the photo above) helped keep all the moisture contained.
Ease of Use:
The Charlie Banana diaper has a really generous pocket opening that made it easy to stuff. Both Jason and I had a really easy time getting our hands in. I’m also a big fan of the top “flap” over the opening that ensured the insert didn’t touch Levi’s sensitive skin.
Like most diapers with adjustable elastic, it’s not SUPER easy to adjust, but it’s not difficult, either. It just takes a little bit of time.
I appreciated that the elastic has what they call “bra style adjustments”, which means you don’t have to button or toggle it – you just slide it to the setting you want. I also like that the elastic is tucked away inside the pocket, so I didn’t have to worry about it poking Levi’s skin.
Quality:
No question about it – this is a well-made diaper. I like the thickness of the PUL, I like the softness of the inner material, and I like the give of the elastic. The only thing I’m a little iffy on is the adjustable part of the elastic. Maybe it’s because I tend to wear out my bras really quickly (maybe I just need to buy better quality bras and not compare them to cloth diapers, I don’t know.) It seems like the adjustable part will hold up well, that’s something only time will tell. I suppose since you probably won’t adjust it very often, there’s not a whole lot of risk there, but that’s the reason I gave this 4 Bums Up for quality.
Overall:
If you’re looking for an adjustable, customizable cloth diaper that’s trim and super cute, the Charlie Banana 2-in-1 system is a great choice.
You can purchase the Charlie Banana 2-in-1 Robot reusable diapering system like the one Levi is wearing for $21.88. The 2-in-1 Swim Diaper & Training Pants are available for $12.88.
Quick note about the Swim Diaper/Training Pants – I think it’s really cool that they included a small absorbent area so that you can use it as more than just a swim diaper – it will also work as a cloth trainer.
I do wish they included some type of toggle or something to help secure the drawstring when it’s cinched, but otherwise it’s a great product that I can’t wait to use more this summer.
